The Bachelor

Okay, normally I'm not a fan of this show. I'll usually watch a few episodes each season but for the most part, the bachelors they picked either (a) gave me the creeps; or (b) were about as interesting as watching paint peel. And the women - yikes, don't even get me started. But apparently the rumors are true - you throw a bunch of single women in a confined space, toss in one bachelor and watch the fur fly. It's rather embarrassing actually. You feel like you should send out memos to all male counterparts informing them that it isn't a fair representation of the female race. At least I hope it isn't. What a sad commentary if it is.

Anyway, I digress. This season I checked it out, taping it on Monday (because no way am I going to miss watching 24 for it, let's be serious) and watching it on Tuesday since nothing is on that night. And I have to say - this is the first bachelor they have picked that I can say if I were to meet at a party or whatever I would think was worth a second look. I mean, aside from the obvious physical attributes, he seems like a normal, down to earth guy. And smart, but not "I need to prove to you how smart I am because deep down inside I'm really insecure and need constant validation" kind of smart. The real kind of common sense smart mixed with a good dose of intelligence. And he laughs a lot, I like that in a man.

The women on the other hand? It's a bit of a mixed bag. Some seem like nice people, others need to grow up, and others need to simmer down and stop talking about their rotting eggs. Thankfully that chick was ousted in the first night.

But here's what I don't get. This guy is intelligent, an ER doctor, and I think around 33. But what does ABC do? Do they pick women close to his own age and maturity level? No. About 75% of these chicks are all in the 23 - 26 age range. And you can tell. Their behaviour gives me flashbacks to my high school days. And then ABC wonders why none of these relationships seem to last after the show. Well duh! At that age, most women--girls really--are still figuring out who they are, especially these days when there seems to be some strange delay in maturing. Not to mention, if you've got a smart guy, you would think he'd want someone with some life experience behind her, some true depth that comes with time. Not some kid still wet behind the ears. I mean c'mon, would it have killed ABC to throw a few 30 year olds in the pot? I think the oldest one there is 28.

It would be a different world if I were in charge. Anyway, I'm running out of time and must bolt.

Ah yes, but young is hot and sexy. Once we reach 30, we're pretty much decrepit, doncha know! Of course, I'm trying to figure out why such a good looking doctor needs to go on tv to find a wife - hmmm.

Can't imagine how he's going to find himself a true partner from amongst a group of giggling high-school like women almost a decade his junior. And it's not like there aren't women in the 23-26 range who wouldn't be far more suitable. But then, they wouldn't let the fur fly, which, I gather, is pretty much the point of the show - watching women fight over a man.

I'd rather watch Skating with the Stars :-)

Pfft, I look way better now at 39 than I ever did at 29. ABC needs a wake up call.

What I don't get is if these guys are SO fabulous, what the hell are they doing on a reality show looking for women? That turns me off right then and there. At the very least it certainly points to a part of their personality I don't find very appealing.

Apparently they pulled this guy off the street and asked him to audition. He says he was concentrating on his internship and residency. Who knows. I suppose it would be the same question you'd ask someone that used any outside help getting a date.

THen again, I think I'm fabulous, yet here I am at 39 and I'm still single, so...what's that say about me?

This isn't to do with being single at 39. You're not on a reality show picking from a pool of men some tv producers threw together thinking it would make good tv. That's the aspect I'm talking about.

Maybe not, but if some tv producer hauled me off the street and said 'hey how'd you like to go to Paris and be wooed by a dozen hot guys', I'm pretty sure I'd be packing my suitcase in record time.

But what if you got there and none of them appealed to you? Then what happens?
If nothing else it would be amusing to watch the guys try to do outdo each other for my affections.

Exactly. I can't say I'd feel any obligation to hook up with anyone. And I certainly wouldn't be proposing marriage although I would be willing to see how well things went in the real world outside of tv land if I found someone interesting.

It's shows like this that make me grateful I don't have cable or a t.v. antennae. ;-)
