Greetings from Revision Hell

I've been missing in action a lot of late. Partly due to the fact that work has been crazy and the other part due to the fact that I am currently wading my way through Revision Hell. I am using the storyboard and sheet sheets from the on line course I took and finding this very helpful, but at the same time, I'm realizing a fair bit needs to be changed in order to make this book work within the series of 4 books it's a part of. But trying to wrangle the necessary scenes into place, make sure the character arcs work and the GMCs make sense is making me think it would be easier to negotiate a peace treaty between two warring factions.

I've reached a point today where I've realized I need to stop storyboarding and do a summary of my book with the new changes and see if it works as far as story & character arc. And page count. That's the scary part. For every scene I've cut or blended or changed I've probably added another. So I'm no further ahead. I'm beginning to feel that the story is getting away from me and what I had originally is getting buried in too much plot, not enough character.

I had planned on having this whole thing ready by August 19th for my CP and other friend who offered to read through. I've missed that deadline and the new one of mid-September is looking extremely iffy at this point. This is the part of writing that I hate. The part where you feel like you hit the wall, suck horribly and should have never entertained the idea of writing a book at all because you obviously don't have a clue what you're doing.

Granted, I know this feeling will pass and eventually I'll figure it all out and get the job done. But right now, basket weaving is looking very good...

I agree, revisions are hell. I would rather write the first draft and just leave it. But you can't sell a book that way.

Sometimes it helps to get get input. Have you thought about getting a CP to read what you have so far and offer suggestions?

Magnificence can't be hurried. The revised story will be worth it!

I waver between loving revisions and hating them. On those days when I cannot get a scene to work or figure out why my character is doing what they're doing, then I don't enjoy it too much. But I'd still rather be doing that than sitting at my desk at the day job! ;-)

Now see, what's wrong with me? I LOVE revisions!

Hang in there, Kelly. Take it one step at a time. And if it helps, go back to the beginning: why did you start writing this particular story? Answering this question honestly tends to lead me back to where I'm supposed to be.

Hi Kelly, I'm with you on the basketweaving, except that I'm even worse at craft than I am at revisions.

And hey, Scandal's Daughter is out!

Don't forget I'm reading your ms when you're done. Pretty please???

Take a deep breath. There. You feel better? No? That's okay. Revisions are terrible. Hang in there!

Annie Mac is right. Maybe have someone read what you have. We're our own worst critics. An objective reader might be a big help.

Good luck!
