Last week I had an idea for a contemporary story that I really, really liked--hence my picking up of some contemporary authors, to get a better feel for the genre since I've been out of it for a good long time. Anyway, the more the story evolves in my head, the more I like it. The more excited I get to start work on it. But when? A question posed to be me by my critique partner as I detailed the plot and characters I had thus far.
Good question. I suggested in my spare time, which elicited a laugh from both of us since I don't actually have much of that. But I figured I would work on it on the side as I found small pockets of time here and there. It was the best I could do, considering once I finish revising The Outlaw Bride I need to jump into revisions of D&B. And then I have to start plotting and writing Saving Grace, then Book 3 awaits. And Book 4. And well now there's a Book 5 in the series...
But this idea is percolating up a storm in my head and the characters are dancing around demanding my attention. And I really like the idea of working on something new while most of my writing time is spent revising, revising, revising.
On my lunch hour yesterday I plotted out about the first 3-4 chapters and wrote 4 single spaced pages. The words and ideas flowed easily and caused me little grief. I thought I could give myself a break on revisions the week I'm on vacation and work only on the new stuff. Refresh my brain while I'm at the camp and unable to get access to the computer.
Little by little I think the book will come together, pieced into coherence a few minutes here, an hour there. I've decided to make it something fun to play with, so there's no pressure, no timeline of when it has to be done.
And speaking of things that need to be done, is anyone familiar with Cole Hauser? I tried to post a pix but blogger is being moody and nothing comes up. I'll try again later.
Either way, I watched Paparazzi last night. The movie was mediocre (although the cameos were pretty fun), but holy hotness, this buddy is smokin'. I must peruse the imdb to see what else he's in. I think he might have been in White Oleander and also Fast & Furious II, but even with Paul Walker I don't think I can sit through that movie again. Unless maybe I play it while muted...hmm...

I say go for it. Work on the contemporary as well as the historical. When you have the urge to write a story, don't ignore it! :-)
Writing something so different will probably help stimulate all your creative juices - have fun with the contemp :-)
Oh, I do that all the time. For me, I need to have something contemporary going while I write historicals. I need something I can be more free and easy with. Sometimes it doesn't go anywhere, sometimes it takes over. If its flowing, go for it.
OOOH! Cole Hauser! I just looked him up on Google Images and I know EXACTLY who you're talking about. He reminds me of a brooding Marlon Brando. He played a skinhead on "Higher Learning" and on "Pitch Black" he was a dirty cop. Yum, yum, YUM.
He can get dirty with me any day. I think he needs to be the hero in my contemporary. He fits the profile perfectly.
Kelly, in tomorrow's blog can you dig up from the archives your trip to Antigonish with Lisa (perhaps it was a long time ago...something about a crash and propane). Would that be considered contemporary?

It wasn't Antigonish it was NG and yes there was ice involved along with a faulty gas heater, two vans, a hair salon, and a big kaboom.
I'd love to try out a contemporary, but mine always come off sounding completely shallow. Oops. :) Good luck with yours!
